DEED online tools help students determine which Minnesota postsecondary programs will put them on the path to the career they wantBy Alessia Leibert, DEED Labor Market Information Research Project Manager
We all want to know which colleges and training programs are best at helping people land a job in the field they want as well as earn enough to pay back student loans and support a family. The Graduate Employment Outcomes online tool has just been updated to display job and earnings outcomes for the class of 2020-21 from 98 institutions of higher education in Minnesota.
Here is an example of what you can find by using the tool:
The tool also represents an essential source of intelligence for postsecondary schools to identify which programs and academic specialties are in highest demand locally and decide how program offerings can be improved.
In addition, the new College Major to Industry of Employment tool has been launched, showing which industries hired graduates from 405 different postsecondary programs of study in Minnesota. Thanks to this unprecedented level of detail, prospective and current students can examine whether the sectors with highest employability match their career goals and earnings expectations.
Both tools help students and their families find the academic program that best matches a student’s career goals, academic strengths and market demand for the skills acquired at school.
The workforce and education data displayed in these tools were collected through the Statewide Longitudinal Educational Data System (SLEDS), a collaborative effort of DEED and the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. Wage records, based on employer payroll and tax reporting systems, offer the most accurate measurement of an individual’s total earnings, including overtime and bonus pay.
Find out more about these tools in these three articles I authored for the March 2024 edition of Minnesota Economic Trends:

Here is an example of what you can find by using the tool:
- What are the highest and lowest paying fields of study in Minnesota?
- Are there differences in what students have been able to do with the same degree attained at different schools with comparable characteristics? Users can compare employability, wages and wage growth from two to eight years after graduation.
- How many graduates at each school found stable, full-time jobs from two to four years after graduation?
- Are graduates employed in industries related to the fields they trained for? At what wages?
- Are graduates employed in the same region where they attended school? How many relocated to a different region of the state, and how do wages differ by region?
The tool also represents an essential source of intelligence for postsecondary schools to identify which programs and academic specialties are in highest demand locally and decide how program offerings can be improved.

Diabetes Basics
Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) disease that affects how your body turns food into energy.
Most of the food you eat is broken down into sugar (also called glucose) and released into your bloodstream. Your pancreas makes a hormone called insulin, which acts like a key to let the blood sugar into your body’s cells for use as energy.
If you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use the insulin it makes as well as it should. When there isn’t enough insulin or cells stop responding to insulin, too much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream, which over time can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss and kidney disease.
Common types of diabetesType 1 diabetesType 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune reaction (the body attacks itself by mistake) that stops your body from making insulin. About 5 percent of the people who have diabetes have type 1.
Type 2 diabetesWith type 2 diabetes, your body doesn’t use insulin well and is unable to keep blood sugar at normal levels. Most people with diabetes – 9 in 10 people – have type 2. It develops over many years and is usually diagnosed in adults, though it is seen increasingly in children, teens, and young adults.
Gestational diabetesGestational diabetes develops in pregnant women who have never had diabetes. If you have gestational diabetes, your baby could be at higher risk for health complications. Gestational diabetes usually goes away after your baby is born, but increases your risk for type 2 diabetes later in life. Your baby is more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life too.
PrediabetesIt's estimated that 1 in 3 people have prediabetes, and many don’t know they have it. Prediabetes is a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as diabetes. Prediabetes increases your risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Learn more about prediabetes.
Symptoms of type 2 diabetesType 2 diabetes often has no symptoms, or the symptoms might go unnoticed. That is one reason why one in four people with diabetes don’t even know they have it. Ask your doctor if you should be tested for diabetes. Talk to your doctor right away if you do have symptoms of diabetes, such as:

MACMH is joining Americans observing National Hispanic Heritage Month.
Crayola Hispanic Heritage Month Coloring Sheets
This month, we celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
"The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively." -- Hispanic Heritage Month
According to the Hispanic Research Center, “over one-third of Latino parents have experienced a mental health disorder—depression, anxiety, substance use disorder, or PTSD—at some point in their lives.”
Among Latino parents with children under age 18,
· 22% experienced a substance use disorder at some time in their lives.
· 14% experienced major depression.
· 11% had an anxiety disorder.
· 8% experienced PTSD.
· 29% of non-U.S. state-born Hispanic parents had experienced a mental health disorder, compared to 51% of U.S. state-born Latino parents.
Additionally,
· 18% of Latinx/Hispanic people in the U.S. do not have health insurance, with those of Honduran and Guatemalan origin having the highest rates of being uninsured.
· In 2018, 56.8% of Latinx/Hispanic young adults 18-25 and 39.6% of adults 26-49 with serious mental illness did NOT receive treatment.
· Nearly 90% of Latinx/Hispanic people over the age of 12 with a substance use disorder did NOT receive treatment.

“For the Latinx/Hispanic community, mental health and mental illness are often stigmatized topics resulting in prolonged suffering in silence,” states Mental Health America.
“This silence compounds the range of experiences that may lead to mental health conditions including immigration, acculturation, trauma, and generational conflicts. Additionally, the Latinx/Hispanic community faces unique institutional and systemic barriers that may impede access to mental health services, resulting in reduced help-seeking behaviors.”
Barriers to treatment can include a number of things, like insurance, availability, and language.
LatinX Therapy
Latinx Therapy was founded in 2018 with the mission to destigmatize mental health in the Latinx community.
Since then, it has expanded to become a bilingual podcast and national directory to find a Latinx Therapist -- 98% of which is made up of Spanish speakers.
Therapy for LatinX
Finding a mental health provider shouldn't make you feel worse.
Therapy for Latinx was created to make this process as easy as possible.

Cash and coaching to help you rediscover and nurture your passions!
“Money” can be one of the most challenging barriers that we face. Often, we simply need more of it. Or, we have a hard time reconciling “giving” ourselves money (even when we’ve earned it) over our kids activities/daycare/household bills - you name it.
In 2023, we will award four grants to applicants who are looking for support in bringing their passion to life. The passion should be one that looks to create positive change for the applicant and others. These awards include a $1500 cash grant, coaching from leading strategy and culture consulting firm Keystone Group International AND a free year of Passion Collective On Demand! To apply, complete the quick application form, telling us why you want this grant, and what impact it will make on your life. Be as expressive as possible about why this matters to you, and the impact you hope it will create on you, or others.

Frequently asked questions:
Who can apply for an Atomic Grant?
Atomic Grants are available to those who identify as a woman, and who are 21+. You can live anywhere in the world - as long as you have a way to receive the money digitally, and you are connected via email and social media.
What do I need to do to receive an Atomic Grant?
Complete an application and make your contribution (see above). We may ask for a brief phone call to clarify questions, but there is no formal interview process.
Atomic® Grants are for people who are passionate about making change happen, for themselves and others. Do not apply if you are viewing this as simply funding for your business, or you are in financial need. We need to see a clear picture of your passion in your application, your journey so far and your detailed plans for how you would use this grant to move your passion forward.
Do I need to be a member of Passion Collective to apply?
Yes, you need to sign up to Passion Collective (i.e. be signed up to our mailing list) at the time of application.
Who decides on the award recipients?
The Passion Collective team will create a shortlist, then we will ask our Passion Collective community to vote for the winner. These votes are taken into consideration as we select the recipient, they are not the only factor.
What are the deadlines for applying?
Grants run each quarter, with a new form each time. Remaining 2023 deadlines are 5pm CST on these dates:
Once you have signed the recipient agreement, we will award the grant.
What responsibilities do I have with the award I receive?
We want to make this as easy as possible for you, but do have some expectations about partnership. We want to share your story of winning the grant, and also where that grant takes you. These stories will likely be in long-form content, published on our website - similar to our Passion Stories - and we’ll publish them on social media, too. If you’re not comfortable sharing your story, then this isn’t the right grant for you. However, we hope that you see it as a benefit to the change you are making, and that you also promote your activity through your networks.
We ask that you only invest your grant into your own business or interest (not another individual or organization), and also that you have the capacity to carry out the work funded by the grant, that you exercise financial controls, and use generally accepted accounting procedures where required. You take on the responsibility for paying any taxes related to the grant and any results of how you spent the grant.
Do I have to pay it back?
No. Because this is a grant, you decide how to invest it. That also means you are responsible for any outcomes of that investment.
How does the mentoring work?
Keystone Group International will provide 3 x 1-hour coaching sessions to each award recipient, either in person or remotely via video-conference or phone. You will work with your contact there to determine the best way to meet. This time must be used within three months of being awarded.
Please note that due to the volume of applications, we do not respond to individual questions about Grants.

- Or, you want to take a class to grow a professional skill that will help earn a promotion or a career change
- Perhaps you have been yearning to write that book that you know will inspire others, but you just need some funding to create the space to write

July marks Disability Pride Month in the United States, an occasion to drive awareness on the rights of people with differing abilities and to highlight their remarkable achievements.
Throughout this month, we will be exploring the symbolism behind each color of the Disability Pride flag, and honor trailblazing women with disabilities. Today's color is RED, representing physical disability.
We’re honored to spotlight American politician and retired Army National Guard Lieutenant colonel, Tammy Duckworth. Tammy is an Iraq War Veteran, Purple Heart recipient, and former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. She's made history as the first woman with a disability elected to Congress, the first female double amputee in the Senate, and the first senator to give birth while in office

Micro-credentials document the competencies that are important for how work is done today. Also known as certificates, badges, or stackable credentials, micro-credentials clarify competence in specific qualifications, including skills, knowledge, and/or experience in a subject area or capability. For those of us who want to move to a new career, these targeted, bite-sized chunks of education are helpful in connecting experiences to new fields or industries.

Individual. Compared to semester-long courses and degree programs, most micro-credentials are designed to be affordable and completed in a few months. The variety of micro-credentials available allows individuals to deepen a skill or to add breadth to their experience. Degree holders and non-degree holders alike use micro-credentials on their resumes to complement other credentials and educational achievements and highlight specific areas of expertise and interest.
Employer. Employers use micro-credential and stackable training programs to support reskilling, upskilling and career pathing within their organizations. These types of programs not only fill immediate gaps in their skill base but support strategies to attract and retain talent.
