Urban Academy________________________ Minnesota School for Urban Learners LICENSED TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION Reports to: Principal Purpose: The purpose of this position is to lead and instruct students according to current and emerging Urban Academy (UA) instruction strategies, values and practices, with the goal that each student learns and masters knowledge and skills that advance their capabilities and motivations for life and work. Under the leadership of the UA Principal develop lesson plans aligned with standards and UA curriculum plans; collaborate with other teaching personnel to advance personal competence and quality of curricula; instruct and manage students; evaluate and assess instructional materials and student performance; meet with parents; and interpret students’ progress and inform parents/guardians about student strengths, weaknesses, and progress. Responsibilities: 1) Plan instruction and other student learning support activities as follows: a) Establish class and subject curriculum plans, as applicable to the teacher’s particular assignment and appropriate to the needs and abilities of students b) Curricula and plans will be consistent with UA and State curriculum and assessment standards, objectives and plans c) Review, select, and modify materials, resources and teaching strategies to carry out the curriculum plan 2) Provide instruction to students in ways that incorporate best teaching practices: a) Develop daily lesson plans b) Teach to verifiable outcomes c) Select objectives and deliver instruction at the correct levels of difficulty d) Verify and monitor student learning and adjust teaching appropriately e) Use principles of instruction and learning in appropriate ways f) Be effectively knowledgeable of performance assessments, checklists, rubrics and correctly use of each of these g) Possess, use and improve appropriate classroom management, human relations, inquiry, and planning skills h) Effectively use skills for inclusivity, diversity and differentiated learning strategies i) Be effectively knowledgeable of child growth, development, and learning j) Develop and implement instructional strategies to maximize student participation k) Provide an honest, respectful, caring, and safe environment for students l) Act as the classroom leader in classroom culture, UA values and passion for learning 3) Establish and maintain positive working relationships with students in the classroom, on school premises, and/or in school activities: a) Communicate and reinforce expectations for appropriate behavior b) Encourage student responsibility, cooperation, and respect for self, others and property c) Adhere to UA policies, procedures and legal requirements d) Help students develop the ability to prevent and solve conflicts 4) Communicate effectively with parents through conferences, written documents, telephone, and other forms of communications 5) Maintain effective working relationships with staff and service providers to meet the needs of students: a) Effectively work in teams on a collaborative basis b) Under the leadership of the Principal contribute to the improvement of UA program, curricula and teaching practices 6) Collaborate with service providers regarding the needs of students. Interceptor Service Operators maintain the sewer pipes and systems operated by Environmental Services (ES). The program is seeking to recruit candidates who are BIPoC, female, persons with disabilities, people who have been incarcerated that may face barriers to careers and/or youth between the ages of 18 to 24. The Career Skills Program is a 1-year, On-The-Job Training opportunity for people interested in employment as an Interceptor Service Operator. To be eligible for recruitment, participants must attend and complete three Preparatory Sessions which include: 1. One 2-hour orientation session that includes an introduction to the Met Council and MCES, as well as the job of the Interceptor Operator.
