Temporary Highway Maintenance Worker/Snow & Ice Transportation Generalist (TG)

​5 Temporary Highway Maintenance Worker/Snow & Ice Transportation Generalist (TG) The Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metro District is hiring multiple temporary positions within the Twin Cities Metro area. Those that are hired into the temporary positions will be offered insurance benefits and will be able to apply for a permanent position during the next hiring cycle. These positions are responsible for maintaining and reconstructing roadways/roadsides; maintaining traffic barriers; performing bituminous road repairs, cleaning culverts, repairing guardrails; performing preventive maintenance on highway equipment; operating tractor mowers and small rollers; removing objects from roadways; setting up traffic controls in high volume traffic and performing work responsibilities associated with accidents, spill cleanup, rut repair, dead deer, etc. Additional duties include but are not limited to: • Performing landscaping duties on roadside (chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/ grinding) • Conducting rest area maintenance to wayside rests and scale areas (building and grounds maintenance, vegetation control, and parking surface repairs) • Driving and operating a variety of heavy equipment to perform snow and ice duties, maintaining roadways for snow and ice control which consists of: removing snow from roadways and shoulders; applying anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removing ice and materials from culverts; performing night or dawn patrols; preparing and inspecting winter equipment, such as snowplow equipment, and cutting edges and sanders. Starting Salary: $24.39 - $30.60 Employment Condition: Temporary/Full Time (work schedule will consist of a 40-hour work week) Summer Days Shift: 6:30AM–4:00PM Monday through Thursday, 6:30AM–10:30AM Friday Winter Days Shift: 7:00AM – 3:30PM Monday through Friday Nights Shift: 7:00PM – 5:30AM Monday evening through Friday morning. The days of work, shift, normal and holiday work hours will vary depending on the requirements of each individual truck station (i.e., day shift, night shift, holidays and weekends). Hours will include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations and seasonal assignments. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one hour of being called. Metro Truck Station locations with vacancies: Chaska (Chaska), Mendota Nights (Mendota), Eden Prairie (Eden Prairie), Golden Valley Traffic Services (Golden Valley), Forest Lake (Forest Lake), Oakdale Traffic Services (Oakdale), Maryland Nights (St. Paul) Locations selection will be conducted at the time of interview. Night Maintenance Premium Pay Shift Differential The shift differential for employees working on assigned shifts which begin before 6:00 A.M. or which end at or after 6:00 P.M. shall be two dollars and twenty-five cents ($2.25) per hour for all hours worked before 6:00 A.M. or after 6:00 P.M on that shift. Such shift differential shall be in addition to the employee's regular rate of pay and shall be included in all payroll calculations but shall not apply during periods of paid leave. An employee who requests and is approved by their supervisor to work before 6 A.M. or after 6 P.M., shall not be eligible for the shift differential. Please see the back for additional information Maintenance employees working night shifts of durations lasting three (3) months or more, covered by this agreement, shall receive Night Premium Pay of $2.00/hour for all shifts which start between 7:00 pm and 11:00 pm. This will apply to all hours worked between the hours of 7:00 pm and 5:30 am. Such premium pay shall be in addition to the employee’s hourly rate of pay, and any shift differential the employee would otherwise be entitled to. The premium pay shall be included in all payroll calculations for shifts actually worked, but shall not apply during periods of paid leave, or in calculations of back-pay. Transportation Generalist Minimum Qualifications: • Must be listed on resume type of CDL (A or B). A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no air brake restriction AND a tanker endorsement. AND • Must be listed in detail on resume: One (1) year of experience performing activities in any of the following: snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment or farm experience). OR • (Education): Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records. • Required to obtain a Class A CDL prior to the probationary period ending. Veterans may be eligible for a waiver of CDL based on military experience. Successful candidates for the Transportation Generalist positions will be required to pass a computerized ACT math and reading test as part of the hiring contingencies.
